The
wind was again blowing from one goal to the other which was always going to
have an influence on the game. However, we couldn’t wish for a better start.
From our kick off the ball was played back to James Boulton
who played it forward to Kyle Curtis and from his pass Brad Monelle
coolly slotted his left foot shot pass the keeper to put us 1-0 up after just
15 seconds. This was the quickest goal we had ever scored. With the wind in our
favour we took full advantage and pressed hard for more goals. Some good
pressure from open play and corners meant our defence were rarely troubled in
the first half and eventually we scored a second with a spectacular overhead
kick from Craig Andrews to put us 2-0 up at half time.
From
experience though, we felt 2 goals weren’t enough and we knew what we had to do
to protect our lead.
With
the wind now in our faces, shooting chances were more difficult but we still
continued to pressure the Ashton goal. Our Midfield quartet of 
However, Ashton had 2 chances within 5 minutes of each other which they scored both goals from. We just couldn’t clear the ball effectively and this gave them the shooting opportunities.
For both teams there was still time to win the match but some wonderful defending from James Hurrell Smith prevented Ashton from scoring and our 2 strikers Brad and Craig just didn’t get the ball into areas of their penalty box to create an opening. In the end we had to settle for a point which was probably a fair result.
Despite some good individual performances from several players today Man of the Match was awarded by the referee deservedly to James Hurrell Smith who played extremely well in defence.
